In 2002 Varela represented Portugal in Rio de Janeiro International Theatre Festival. His
choice was to stage "Barca do Inferno" by Gil Vicente, the first portuguese theatre author.
The cast was full of experienced and awarded stars as of young Brazilian actors.
Considered by the audience as the best show in the festival, was staged in two weeks at
the Jockey Theatre in Rio de Janeiro.
Cast: Caio Junqueira, Camilo Beviláqua, Juliana Baroni, Freddy Ribeiro, Bruno Padilha,
Luis Filipe Nascimento, Nina Morena, Marcello Gonçalves, Renata di Castro, etc.
